Where to eat and stay in Tepoztlán?
Tepoztlán is famous for its traditional market, where native corn is the main player. Hand-made tortillas, tlacoyos stuffed with ricotta, beans or pork paste, salted beef tacos, a myriad of different quesadilla stuffings and open-faces sopes or picaditas are some of the local delicacies that you will find in the central market. Tepoztlán also boasts great restaurants where local dishes are transformed into haute cuisine creations. Below is a list of some of our favorite restaurants.
Parcela
Here you can eat in the center of the beautiful organic plot where the ingredients of your food are grown. Parcela is the result of the synchronicity and cooperation between several local actors: this project is much more than a restaurant.
Casa Fernanda
Our favorite when we feel like seafood, Casa Fernanda is also a hotel and spa and they have a cafeteria with amazing croissants and puff pastries that they bake right there. The menu has a clear influence from Baja California, where they source sustainable seafood. In their store and exhibition center, Casa Fernanda develops fair trade programs and promotion of the most admirable artisans in Mexico.
El Ciruelo
El Ciruelo, in the center of Tepoztlán, has been for decades the place to enjoy first class cuisine and service in our small town. The old mansion that houses the restaurant on its shaded terraces also offers beautiful rooms and a shop with handicrafts and objects selected with refinement and erudition.
Pasaje Tlalocan
This little plaza next to the Atongo River has a grove of magnificent ahuehuetes or Moctezuma cypress that are worth the visit on their own. Tlalocan brings together an excellent Italian and Argentinean restaurant, Ombú, a bar with live music every Thursday and Saturday, an excellent French pastry shop, Cadó, La Hoja graphic workshop, and several other shops attended by both residents and tourists visiting Tepoztlán.
La Posada del Tepozteco
The site of a historic house where Mexican artists and intellectuals same for rural respite in the first half of the 20th century, this beautiful hotel and restaurant definitely has the best view of the town of Tepoztlán from its extensive gardens, and stop for a drink at sunset is a must, but both the restaurant and the hotel are also magnificent.
La Sombra del Sabino
La Sombra del Sabino bookstore and literary café has a splendid garden, a favorite with families with young children, and a light menu for brunch and lunch, plus an excellent selection of teas, scones and cakes. They offer an interesting cultural program and events every weekend, from storytelling to conferences, book presentations and poetry readings. They are providers of the most recent literary news and have a careful selection of books in English and Spanish.
